Macro Dubplates Vol. 3: Brooklyn Vs Kingston, self-released, **** In 2004, New York producer Danger Mouse collaged instrumental snippets from The Beatles’ “White Album” with rap vocals from Jay-Z’s “The Black Album” to create “The Grey Album”. Here in NZ, our own unsung hero of mash-up culture is Auckland’s Chris Macro, who specialises in combining killer Jamaican dub with classic hip hop vocals.

The first Macro track to blow my mind was an echo-heavy King Tubby dub featuring roots singer Horace Andy proclaiming money to be the “root of all evil”, cleverly intercut with the vocal from Wu Tang Clan’s 1993 hit “C.R.E.A.M.” (Cash Rules Everything Around Me). Though the source recordings were made 20 years apart, Macro had laced them seamlessly together so Andy and Wu Tang’s Method Man could perform a duet on the evils of capitalism.

No matter how inspired, such unauthorised use of copyright material is generally shut down by irate record companies and music publishers, but Macro remains unmolested because he gives away his work for free. Featuring The Congos, Beastie Boys, Beenie Man, Biggie Smalls, Prince Jammy, Jay Z and Lee Perry, you can download his latest offering at www.chrismacro.com , and believe me, you should: to hear MC Lyte’s immortal “Brooklyn” roll out over a bass-bumping cut of Jamaica’s “Real Rock” riddim is to know that summer is almost here.
